Victorian Medical Research Acceleration Fund

Applications for Round 6 of the Victorian Medical Research Acceleration Fund are now closed.

Launched by the Victorian Government in 2017, each year the Fund provides funding support to accelerate health and medical research and fast-track innovative projects from research to real-world impact.

A total of 90 projects have received funding through the five previous rounds, contributing $15.3 million to the Victorian health and medical research sector.

Round 6 of the Victorian Medical Research Acceleration Fund will include $5 million in funding through two streams.

  • Foundation Stream: $3 million in funding to medical research projects that can deliver benefits to Victoria.
  • Public Health and Health Inequalities Stream: $2 million in funding for medical research projects addressing public health inequalities that affect priority populations in Victoria.

The Fund will be delivered in two tiers:

  • Tier 1: Early-stage research – Supporting innovative early-stage research that will deliver health and economic benefits to Victoria.
  • Tier 2: Research translation – Providing direct funding to fast-track the translation of health and medical research into real-world outcomes.

To help address underrepresentation of women in health and medical research, projects led by women or research teams comprised of at least 50% women will receive an added assessment weighting. Full details of this provision can be found in the Program Guidelines available below.

The Fund is being complemented by a $2 million mRNA-specific stream to support and accelerate RNA-based therapeutics research, the mRNA Victoria Research Acceleration Fund.

Please note, projects are only eligible to apply for one funding stream (either the Victorian Medical Research Acceleration Fund or the mRNA Victoria Research Acceleration Fund).
