How to apply for a Major Event ticketing declaration

Having your event declared under the Major Events Act 2009 provides legal protections against ticket scalping and unauthorised ticket resale, and enables enforcement support from DJSIR Authorised Ticketing Officers.

Eligibility and process

Who Can apply?

It is preferred that a declaration be in place prior to any tickets going on sale.

The major event should meet the following criteria to be considered for declaration:

  • Be a large-scale sporting, cultural, or entertainment event with significant economic impact in Victoria.
  • Have high ticket demand, with a likely risk of unauthorised resale or ticket scalping.
  • Receive extensive media coverage and promote Victoria as a host of major events.

Examples of declared major events include:

  • Australian Open
  • Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix
  • Boxing Day Test
  • AFL Finals and Grand Final
  • Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour
  • Oasis Live Concerts 2025
  • Wicked, Moulin Rouge! The Musical
  • Titanic: The Artefact Exhibition
  • The Melbourne International Comedy Festival

How to apply?

To begin your application, email us at fairgo.forfans@ecodev.vic.gov.au for an initial discussion about your event’s eligibility. Please include a summary of how your event meets the major event criteria, including its scale, economic impact, ticket demand, and media coverage.

It is recommended that a declaration is finalised before any tickets are released for sale. A DJSIR representative will review the information and advise whether you can proceed with a formal application.
