Key domestic results

New Tourism Research Australia Domestic Tourism Statistics (DoTS) data for the year ending March 2025 (released 25 June 2025) shows that Victoria received:

  • $25.0 billion in domestic overnight spend, up 1% year-on-year (YoY).
  • 31.1 million domestic overnight trips, down 1% YoY
  • 87.5 million domestic nights, down 2% YoY.

Next domestic data release will be on 24 September 2025.

To note: the new Domestic Tourism Statistics (DoTS) have replaced the National Visitor Survey, introducing a more robust methodology designed to enhance data quality and reliability. As a result, the March 2025 quarter release includes only domestic overnight data, alongside a limited set of back-cast historical estimates at the state level. Daytrip figures will be released along with the June 2025 quarter data on 24 September. For more information visit Tourism Research Australia.

Regional boundaries

Tourism research data is typically provided for Victoria's 12 tourism regions including Melbourne.

Some large tourism regions also contain sub-regions. Each tourism region or sub-region is constructed using smaller geographical building blocks called Statistical Areas Level 2 (SA2s) developed by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
