Latest key results

In the year ending December 2024 (released 26 March 2025) tourism in Victoria generated:

  • $40 billion in total tourism spend, up 6% year-on-year (YoY)
  • 88.5 million total visitors, down 1% YoY
  • 161.1 million total nights, up 20% YoY.

Visitor forecasts

Tourism Research Australia have published national tourism forecasts for 2024 to 2029, including state-level projections for domestic visitor nights.

Victorian spend and visitor projections are developed by the Tourism and Events Research Unit. These estimates are based on national growth rates, assuming a constant market share. The same approach is applied to develop international visitor forecasts for Victoria by market (market-specific international spend data is unavailable).

By 2029 it’s projected that Victoria will receive:

  • $50.9 billion in total spend, up 27% on 2024 estimates
  • 105.2 million total visitors, up 21% on 2024 estimates
  • 93.6 million domestic visitor nights, up 18% on 2024 estimates.

First Peoples tourism in Victoria

In 2023, visitors to Victoria who included First Peoples activities on their trip accounted for:

  • $1.3 billion in total tourism expenditure
  • 511,000 overnight trips, with 65% by international visitors
  • 2% of overnight visitors to/within Victoria, in line with the national average.

Headline figures include domestic overnight visitors who have undertaken a First Peoples activity in Victoria, as well as international overnight visitors that have undertaken the activity on their trip to/within Australia (which could have been taken in another state or territory).
