Travel is for everyone, and accessible tourism is helping make that vision a reality here in Victoria.

Accessible tourism is about opening the door to travel - empowering everyone to explore - and it's transforming how people experience destinations across Australia.

In 2024 travellers with accessible needs took more than 70 million trips across Australia.

Those trips generated over $29 billion in visitor spending – around 17% of total tourism expenditure – cementing accessible travellers as major contributors to the visitor economy.

What is accessible tourism?

Accessible tourism ensures travel is welcoming for everyone, allowing people of all ages and abilities to enjoy same experiences and services.

How we’re making accessibility a reality on the ground

We're proud to make it easier for more people to explore destinations across the state.

From supporting Australia’s first accessible houseboat to enhancing access to Victoria’s iconic, and award-winning destinations, these are some of the ways we’re making accessibility a reality across the state.

Mildura’s All Seasons Houseboat

In 2024, Australia’s first accessible houseboat, Elevate Luxury, launched in Mildura with support from the Regional Tourism Investment Fund. The 6 bedroom houseboat sets a new standard for luxury and accessibility on the Murray River. Featuring:

  • wheelchair access
  • railings
  • wide corridors
  • adjustable benches
  • and more.

Sovereign Hill

Our $6 million investment in Sovereign Hill introduced new experiences, upgrades, and event spaces, including an accessible gold panning zone with sensory-friendly features. The Museum has won the Excellence in Accessible Tourism Award at the Victorian Tourism Awards for two years running.

Penguin Parade

This world-famous penguin attraction drew 709, 673 visitors last year, with 131 sell-out nights. Our $5 million investment has helped deliver a new accessible boardwalk and viewing platform, creating a closer connection to nature while ensuring the safety of both penguins and visitors.

The success of these projects shows that when experiences are designed to welcome more people, everyone benefits - strengthening communities, supporting local businesses, and creating jobs.
