All aboard for the next chapter of Australia’s first five-star river cruise
PS Australian Star is the biggest paddlesteamer in the southern hemisphere, and it is on its way from the Mildura boatyard to its new home in Echuca.
Stopping at Torrumbarry for the installation of the top deck cabins, the largest paddlesteamer in the southern hemisphere will arrive at its new riverside home for final touches to prepare for its maiden passenger voyage early next year.
From the 1850s to the late 1900s, paddlesteamers played a crucial role on the Murray River. They ferried passengers, traders, livestock and wool along the busy river. Now, aboard PS Australian Star, travellers will bask in the stunning natural beauty, where five-star luxury flows with the current.
Embracing old-world elegance, features include:
- capacity for 38 passengers
- a fine dining restaurant
- function space
- guest lounge with panoramic views
- bars across 2 levels
- elevator and 19 ensuite cabins, including accessible options.
Delivered by local company Murray River Paddlesteamers, the project used Victorian contractors Baldwin Boats, Mega Marine and Jointly. It created up to 46 jobs throughout the build and ongoing operations.
Tourism is big business in the Murray region. Last year, the region welcomed more than 6.2 million visitors who stayed 7.3 million nights and spent $2 billion. This fleet of premium cruising options on the Murray River will provide a massive boost to the tourism economy.
This project is supported by a $2.25 million investment through the Regional Tourism Investment Fund.
