A new space dedicated to environmental art has opened in the Grampians. The space will provide a unique cultural experience for the region, and is the first space of its kind in the country.

Wama Foundation precinct is a state-of-the-art gallery and 16-hectare botanical site. It has received a $6.75 million investment from our Regional Tourism Investment Fund.

Based in the foothills of the Gariwerd or Grampians National Park, the project included:

  • a new climate-controlled gallery
  • reception, retail and office space
  • café kitchen and seating areas
  • multipurpose events room
  • toilet facilities
  • parking
  • on-site access pathways
  • signage to the Gallery building
  • access boardwalk to the wetlands
  • landscape gardens around the gallery
  • a maintenance depot.

The gallery, The National Centre for Environmental Art celebrates the connection between art, science and nature, and will host major exhibitions inspired by the natural environment. It will also borrow artwork collections from leading galleries across the country and world, and hold artist workshops and educational sessions.

As well as the gallery, the precinct encompasses:

  • the Gariwerd/Grampians Gardens
  • the Gariwerd/Grampians Endemic Gardens
  • Jallukar Grasslands
  • ephemeral wetlands
  • outdoor artworks
  • a shop and more.

The Wama Foundation precinct is expected to increase visitation to the region. It supports the Grampians tourism economy which in 2024 welcomed 2.26 million visitors, and contributed to the record $40 billion spent by tourists visiting Victoria in 2024.
