Australia-first medical research centre opens in Melbourne
The Aikenhead Centre for Medical Discovery is co-located at St Vincent’s Hospital in Fitzroy. It will bring together researchers, clinicians and industry together to turn new research and ideas into better healthcare.
The $206 million centre will focus on early intervention and prevention to improve and save lives.
It will support research and devolvement in:
- medical technology
- biotechnology
- digital health.
It will help drive lifesaving breakthroughs that:
- improve outcomes for patients
- increase access to healthcare innovations
- strengthen Victoria’s health system
- shape the future of healthcare.
The founding partners are St. Vincents Hospital Melbourne, The University of Melbourne, Swinburne University, RMIT, Australian Catholic University, St. Vincents Institute and The Bionics Institute.
The centre can accommodate up to 900 researchers and includes:
- 3D printing laboratories
- a kinetics lab
- engineering workshops to produce medical device prototypes and robotics
- an education centre.
We’re proud to have invested $60 million to establish the centre. It will support the development of innovative treatments and technologies including:
- artificial intelligence
- implantable digital devices
- regenerative medicine.
This will help address future health challenges and chronic conditions such as:
- epilepsy
- cancer
- osteoarthritis.
The centre forms part of Melbourne’s world-leading biomedical precinct.
The centre will strengthen Victoria’s position as a global leader in medical research, healthcare innovation and advanced manufacturing. It will support new discoveries, create high-skilled jobs and help deliver better health outcomes for patients in Victoria and around the world.
