World-leading biopharmaceutical company BioNTech has opened a new state-of-the-art clinical-scale mRNA manufacturing and research facility.

Located at La Trobe University’s Bundoora campus, the new facility marks a major milestone for Victoria’s life sciences sector and sovereign manufacturing capability.

BioNTech will work with researchers and biotech companies to manufacture investigational medicines for clinical trials, including potential new treatments for:

  • cancer
  • heart disease
  • neurological and autoinflammatory diseases
  • potential new vaccines.

The facility will also produce research-grade RNA materials for Australian researchers to develop early-stage vaccines and therapies and advance them for clinical use.

The facility aims to support up to 1,200 jobs in the wider ecosystem over the next 10 years.

This milestone builds on the opening of BioNTech's Innovation Centre in Melbourne and the launch of a Clinical Trial Oncology Platform that is improving access to next-generation cancer treatments.

By forging strategic partnerships with global leaders like BioNTech, mRNA Victoria is strengthening Victoria’s position at the forefront of mRNA innovation.
