Construction is underway on the Cultural Connections Centre in Barmah, a landmark project to celebrate the stories, art, and heritage of the Yorta Yorta people.

It is a milestone for the Yorta Yorta people and the Murray River region.

The centre will be a vibrant hub to showcase Yorta Yorta art, stories, and traditions. It will serve as both a community learning space and a tourism gateway to the Barmah National Park.

The project will deliver:

  • two cultural research rooms and a dedicated area for elders to record history
  • space for learning and cultural exchange, including 2 meeting spaces and a public exhibition area
  • kitchen and storeroom
  • accessible amenities
  • an outdoor gathering space, landscaping, and decking.

It will be a destination for tourists to connect with Yorta Yorta heritage and the natural beauty of Barmah National Park.

The project is being delivered by the Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation (YYNAC). It's supported by the Regional Tourism Investment Fund and the Aboriginal Community Infrastructure Program.

YYNAC represents the descendants of the Original Ancestors of the Yorta Yorta Nation. It works to uphold Yorta Yorta peoples’ cultural heritage, traditional laws, and connection to Country.

Additional support through Tourism Infrastructure Projects has also kicked off in Barmah National Park. The Murray River Adventure Trail project includes:

  • a new floating pontoon canoe launch
  • upgraded toilets, parking, signage to the Gulf Campground
  • upgraded tracks linking Barmah to the riverfront.

We're supporting our regions through investment in tourism infrastructure to attract more visitors, create more jobs and create a legacy that will benefit all Victorians.
