Deakin University opens 2 innovative new research facilities
Two new research facilities have opened at Deakin University’s Geelong campus:
- Aquaculture and Feed Innovation Laboratory (also known as the AquaFI Lab).
- Circular Economy Accelerator BioFactory (also known as the Deakin BioFactory).
Both facilities will do important research, support the economy and help create jobs for Victorians.
About the AquaFI Lab
The AquaFI Lab is a state-of-the-art aquaculture research and innovation centre. It focuses on:
- sustainable fish production
- novel feed and aquaculture technology development
- industry training.
Aquaculture is the fastest growing food production sector in the world.
The AquaFI Lab will support Victoria’s aquaculture sector. This will help to improve the state’s food security and reduce risks to our food sovereignty.
We contributed $2 million to this facility.

About the Deakin BioFactory
Deakin's biofactory will develop new ways to recycle and reuse organic waste, such as:
- food waste
- agricultural waste
- marine by-products.
It will help turn this organic waste into new and useful products, including:
- protein-rich feed
- nutritional ingredients
- fertiliser
- biogas
- biomaterials for medical and textile applications.
The biofactory will help reduce waste and pollution and improve Victoria's recycling.
This facility is a part of the Circular Economy Accelerator-Organics (CEA-O) cooperative. We provided $10 million in funding for the CEA-O cooperative.

The funding for these projects came from the Victorian Higher Education State Investment Fund (VHESIF). This $350 million fund supported universities to boost productivity and Victoria’s economy.
