Eyes of cod watch over fish hatchery
At 16 metres long and over 3.5 metres high, the world’s largest Murray cod is now serving as a unique lookout over activity at the Arcadia Native Fish Hatchery.
The statue is part of a $3 million project to create new visitor facilities at the Arcadia Native Fish Hatchery, We funded this through our Regional Tourism Investment Fund.
The giant cod consists of steel skeleton with a concrete skin and surrounded by rubber soft fall.
It takes over the mantle as the world’s biggest cod from a 15-metre-long giant cod statue in Swan Hill that has held the record as the world’s biggest cod statue since the early 1990s.
In addition to the Murray cod statue, which has become a spectacle for locals and travellers alike, the project has delivered:
- a new visitor centre
- a fish-themed playground
- public toilet and showers
- picnic and BBQ facilities
- a family friendly fish-out pond stocked with ready to catch fish.
The improvements are already attracting avid anglers and tourists to the fishery located 15 minutes south of Shepparton, helping more visitors to learn about Victoria’s iconic Murray cod and how the Arcadia Native Fish Hatchery is helping to bolster native fish populations.
