Morwell has been chosen to host what could be Australia’s largest data centre development.

Leading global asset manager and operator Keppel Ltd. has signed an agreement with family-owned Australian business Lightwood, securing the rights to lease a 123-hectare industrial site in the heart of the proposed Gippsland Renewable Energy Zone.

The site has potential access to 720 MW of gross power for the deployment of a hyperscale data centre campus.

The unique site offers:

  • existing infrastructure to provide sustainable raw water to cool data centre servers
  • easy access to Melbourne and Victoria’s expanding pool of tech professionals
  • industrial land in the heart of one of the state’s largest electricity nodes.

This exciting project will be a major investment in regional Victoria. This could create local jobs in Gippsland, drive investment in the Latrobe Valley, and support Victoria’s wider economy.

Victoria is already home to over 40 data centres. Thanks to our outstanding land, energy and talent, we’re emerging as a prominent data centre hub in the Asia Pacific.

Our $5.5 million Sustainable Data Centre Action Plan will position Victoria as the national leader in data centre investment – unlocking projects worth up to $25 billion in potential capital expenditure.
