Indian company boosts smart energy innovation in Victoria

Kimbal is a global leader in smart metering infrastructure and its expansion into the state is a big win for Victorians and the energy grid.

Kimbal’s entrance will:

• provide the state with world-class smart grid expertise and sophisticated technologies
• advance our clean energy transition
• create approximately 50 skilled jobs over the next 3 years.

Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is the backbone of a modern electricity grid. The technology allows electricity, gas and water meters to automatically send usage information to utility companies as well as consumers.

This means consumers are billed more accurately and transparently while our energy grid becomes more efficient and sustainable.

Since it launched in 2011, Kimbal has deployed 12 million smart metering endpoints around the world.

The company’s investment in Victoria will secure our state’s position as the Australia-New Zealand hub for smart energy innovation. It will also be central to our ambitious clean energy transition, supporting the management of rooftop solar, batteries and electric vehicles.

The announcement follows the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Australia, which included key engagements with government and business in Victoria. The successful trip reinforced the strength of Victoria’s relationship with India:

• Victoria is home to Australia’s largest Indian diaspora, with over 258,000 people born in India now calling our great state home.
• We welcome the largest number of international students from India of all Australian states and territories, with more than 78,000 international student enrolments from India in 2025.
• The 2-way trade between our regions was valued at $4.4 billion in 2024-25.

Our refreshed India Strategy is guiding collaboration between our regions and identifies key areas of opportunity. This includes strengthening outcomes in the digital economy and growing outcomes in sustainability and energy.
