Keysborough Learning Centre is giving learners from diverse cultures a training pathway into the care sector. Their program starts with foundational skills and ends with finding a job.

The centre is helping Victorians from a range of backgrounds, who speak languages other than English, find rewarding careers.

Since the program began in 2023, more than 90 students from the centre have completed or are about to complete their qualification. Almost 80% of graduates have found a job in the care sector.

The first step on the pathway is to support learners with core foundation skills. This step also includes pre-vocational courses such as Occupational English for Aged Care Workers or Digital Essentials. The Adult, Community and Further Education (ACFE) Board fund these courses so that learners have access to free or low-cost training.

Participants then complete a Certificate III in Individual Support in Ageing or Disability. Students benefit from subsidised courses through the Victorian Government’s Skills First program.

Keysborough Learning Centre has partnered with industry to deliver work-integrated training. This includes a simulated workplace for students to train in. They have access to equipment and devices loaded with the tools and software used in the sector.

The City of Greater Dandenong funds the third stage of the program. It provides support to get a job in the care sector through:

  • mentoring and advocacy
  • opportunities for work-ready training or volunteering
  • connections with local employers

There are more than 200 Learn Locals operating across Victoria. They offer tailored support in a range of courses from numeracy and literacy to digital skills. Learn Locals are supporting almost 30,000 Victorians each year to access essential skills for life and work.
