Major upgrades to Victoria’s trails lead to more outdoor adventures
Victoria is cementing its reputation as a premier destination for adventure with upgrades to 3 of the state’s major trails.
The trails will deliver new experiences for walkers, hikers, cyclists, and mountain bike riders across the state. From East Gippsland to the Grampians, these upgrades will enhance visitor experiences, support local communities, and showcase the natural beauty of our regions.
East Gippsland Rail Trail
The final 11.46-kilometre section of the East Gippsland Rail Trail at Simpsons Creek has been resurfaced. This milestone means the entire 100-kilometre trail - one of the longest in Australia - is now fully upgraded. Supported by the Regional Tourism Investment Fund, this delivered:
- a safer, smoother journey for walkers, runners, and cyclists
- works completed by local contractors using locally sourced materials which supported the local community
- exclusive access to some of Victoria’s most pristine landscapes.
The improvements ensure the trail is accessible to users of all abilities, while also strengthening the local economy.

Grampians Peaks Trail
In the Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park, a $5 million project is underway to enhance the 160-kilometre Grampians Peaks Trail, one of Victoria’s most iconic hiking destinations. Supported by the Tourism Infrastructure Program, ground has been broken at Mount Zero (Mura Mura) Trailhead and the project will deliver:
- an upgraded carpark
- improved picnic and visitor facilities
- landscaping, and interpretative signage.
These works mark the final stage in a series of trailhead improvements. Expected to be complete in early 2026, the project will ensure the Grampians Peaks Trail continues to attract day walkers and intrepid multi-day hikers alike.

Omeo Mountain Bike Trails

Supported by the Regional Tourism Investment Fund, the trails feature:
- cross-country and gravity trails for all skill levels
- stunning views of Mount Sam and Mount Mesley
- connecting trails to Livingstone Park for easy access
Further upgrades are planned for 2026, including new signage, seating, bike racks, feature stonework, and even ride-through structures with a fixed photo station, ensuring riders can capture and share their experiences.
