New Barwon Heads cabins to boost Surf Coast tourism

Where the river meets the sea, Barwon Heads offers the best of the Bellarine in one postcard-perfect destination. Surf Coast scenery combined with a relaxed village atmosphere makes it one of Victoria's most sought-after coastal escapes. It’s so popular that an average of 80% of visitors return and the average length of stay is 5.5 nights.

Now, there are more reasons for visitors to the Surf Coast to pack their bags, with 7 new cabins now available at the Barwon Heads Caravan Park.

The new cabins are supported by the most recent round of the Regional Tourism Investment Fund.

Four new 2-bedroom cabins and 3 new one-bedroom deluxe cabins, including one accessible option, have created more local jobs and more reasons to stay longer in our regions.

Benefits to the local economy include:

• 17 jobs were supported during construction
• the project is expected to boost occupancy at the caravan park by 4,509 visitors per year
• the new cabins will add an additional 1,750 visitor nights per year
• estimated to support 7 ongoing local jobs through increased tourism expenditure, contributing an estimated $1.9 million each year to the local economy.

The cabins are modular designs, built offsite and transported to their new home in Barwon Heads.

Two existing one-bedroom cabins will also be upgraded next year as part of the wider project.

First Peoples influence is embedded throughout the project, such as:

• the design and fit-out delivered in consultation with the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation
• artist Billy-Jay O'Toole's artwork features on the cabins' glass sliding doors
• Wadawurrung artwork is featured across the precinct
• local cultural knowledge also shaping the surrounding landscape.
