A new national hub for training and innovation in the building sector is coming to Melbourne Polytechnic.

The National TAFE Centre of Excellence in Housing and Construction will collaborate nationally with industry, TAFEs and universities to help solve skills shortages and build more homes, more quickly with lower environmental impact.

It will deliver training in offsite construction, which combines conventional construction with cutting-edge manufacturing to produce buildings or parts of buildings offsite.

Located in Heidelberg, the Centre will feature holographic learning suites, digital design labs and modular construction workshops.

The Centre will be delivered by Melbourne Polytechnic to leverage the TAFE’s existing Advanced Manufacturing Centre of Excellence as well as its long-established strengths in the more traditional trades.

The Victorian Government and Commonwealth Government are jointly funding this $50 million project, which is due to open in 2028.

This is one of the key initiatives highlighted in the Victorian Government’s Economic Growth Statement, which will support investment, create jobs, boost priority sectors – including housing and manufacturing – and drive exports.
