Pit building shifts up a gear for Formula 1 fans and Albert Park locals
Melbourne’s iconic Albert Park Precinct will be better than ever for both the community and the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix with upgrades coming to the famous pit building.
The project will include the new pit building, plus improvements to the surrounding Precinct. It will deliver better facilities for Formula 1 fans and local clubs.
Originally built in 1995, the pit building will be replaced to bring it into the 21st century. The appointed head contractor, Icon, will deliver the project. The building will meet the year-round demands of community sport and provide a multi-purpose venue for a range of events.
The new building will include 7 indoor sport courts, 2 more than are currently on site. This is alongside improved clubrooms for tenant clubs using the outdoor fields. This will ensure local sport benefits from the upgraded facilities for the long term.
The new pit building will be complemented by additional park upgrades that benefit all park users and help invigorate the precinct.
With Formula 1 now bigger than ever before, the new pit building will also ensure the race has the infrastructure to match other host cities. This will help maintain Victoria’s prized place on the race calendar for years to come, showcasing Melbourne to the world.
To supercharge race day, the new facility will include:
- 14 garages
- A race control
- a race administration
- a media centre.
For motorsport fans, the world-renowned Paddock Club at Albert Park will be expanded to fit 5,000 patrons a day. The club will offer amazing hospitality experiences and prime viewing spots along the main straight to see all the action.
The Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix continues to reach record heights with the 2025 edition welcoming 465,498 fans through the gates across the 4 days. Plus hotel occupancy in central Melbourne was around 94% on the Saturday during the race.
It is a pillar of Victoria’s enviable calendar of major events which provides a boost of over $3.3 billion a year to our economy.
Initial works on site are already underway with demolition works to begin after the 2026 race and be completed in time for the 2028 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix.
