Optain is a medical device and software company. They use AI-enabled retinal screening for early detection of eye disease. It is establishing its Asia Pacific headquarters and expanding its global Research and Development (R&D) and Engineering Hub in Melbourne. This will create up to 49 jobs and $10 million in R&D spending in the state.
Optain’s groundbreaking technology was first developed here in Victoria. It has since scaled up and launched into the US. Its retina-screening technology is currently used for early detection of health conditions such as:

- macular degeneration
- glaucoma.
The company’s expanded hub in Victoria will advance its AI technology to detect a wider range of conditions, such as:
- coronary artery disease
- kidney disease
- neurodegenerative diseases.
The APAC headquarters and R&D and Engineering Hub will partner with Victorian universities, research centres and hospitals to drive more health technology innovations.
