Record Victorian food and fibre exports lead nation again

Victorian farmers and food manufacturers have delivered another stellar year of record-breaking exports. The 2023-24 Food and Fibre Export Performance Report shows that Victoria hit our $20 billion target 6 years ahead of schedule and captured 27% of the total national export value.

Food and fibre exports include all produce and materials grown in Victoria, such as:

  • wheat
  • wine
  • horticulture
  • dairy
  • prepared foods
  • wool
  • wood.

The results cement Victoria’s position as the nation’s top state for food and fibre, building on 2 years in a row of record-breaking numbers.

Victoria was one of only 2 states to see growth in food and fibre export value in 2023-24. This highlights the resilience of Victorian producers who managed global challenges to once again come out on top.

In a great success story for the industry, Victoria’s dairy exports saw a welcome rebound. Butter exports surged by an incredible 81%– a testament to the quality of our produce and safety standards.

China remained Victoria’s largest export market for another year, totalling nearly $5 billion in value in 2023-24. The report shows growth in export value to many of our key markets including Japan, South Korea, Vietnam and India.

These results are backed by the Victorian Government’s Trade and Investment (VGTI) Network. It works closely with our farmers and food manufacturers to source new export opportunities in global markets.

The Boosting Victorian Exports Package

The Victorian Budget 2025/26, announced recently, includes the $34.9 million Boosting Victorian Exports Package. The package will help more small and medium businesses:

  • export their home-grown products to global markets
  • identify new markets
  • diversify their customer base.

It includes:

  • one-to-one trade facilitation support for businesses scaling up their exports
  • a new skills mentoring program to provide small business owners with experienced, professional guidance to grow their business.
