The future starts now for the next generation of construction workers
The first students have started training at the Future of Housing Construction Centre of Excellence.
The centre is a new national hub for training and innovation in the building sector. It will enable Victoria to grow our construction workforce. With more skilled workers we can build more homes, more quickly, with lower environmental impact.
The first training course at the centre focuses on modern methods of construction.
It is a pilot program that introduces students to:
- prefabrication
- modular construction
- volumetric construction.
Melbourne Polytechnic designed the short course in collaboration with industry. It is being delivered from a newly refurbished space at their Heidelberg campus.
Melbourne Polytechnic is delivering the Future of Housing Construction Centre of Excellence. They are working in collaboration with TAFEs and in partnerships with:
- industry
- employers
- unions
- universities.
Work is also underway to design and build a new training facility at the Heidelberg campus. The new facility will feature the latest construction equipment, tools and digital technologies. It will have spaces for:
- industry training
- applied research
- innovation showcases
- collaboration between students, educators and industry partners.
Nearly 70,000 new workers will enter Victoria’s construction sector by 2027. We are investing in these facilities so more people can gain the skills they need for a secure and rewarding career.
Together with the Australian Government we have invested $50 million in the Centre of Excellence.
