Torquay celebrates new state-of-the-art hockey pitch

The future of hockey on the Surf Coast is even brighter with the opening of new facilities at Banyul-Warri Fields.
Funded through the Regional Sports Infrastructure Program, the hockey pitch is the home to the Torquay Hockey Club. It features:
- State-of-the-art, eco-friendly Poligras Platinum World Cup synthetic surface
- 500 lux sports lighting
- electronic scoreboard
- new car park.
New sheltered spectator seating will protect players and fans from the elements.
The local Wadawurrung People have played an important role in the development and planning of this project. Local Wadawurrung artist Billy-Jay (BJ) O’Toole created the artwork that's stitched into the surface of the hockey pitch.
The design is for the Torquay Hockey Club and incorporates handprints as a symbol of connection and togetherness between the players. A ‘U’ between spears and boomerangs represents the strength of the members of the club where all are welcome.
Over the course of this project, we employed 89 people and engaged 49 businesses. This development is contributing to the local economy as well as creating more opportunities for the hockey community.
Surf Coast Shire Council delivered the Banyul-Warri Fields hockey pitch in partnership with us. It is one of 16 projects through our Regional Sports Infrastructure Program. The Surf Coast and Geelong regions includes 5 projects in the program.
Other major investments in the region include:
- Stage 2 of the Wurdi Baierr Aquatic and Recreation Centre in Torquay
- new indoor sports centre at Armstrong Creek
- new 6-court indoor sporting complex at Waurn Ponds
- redeveloped hockey facilities at Stead Park in Corio.
