Upgrades to Wilsons Prom are making waves

Major tourism infrastructure upgrades at Wilsons Prom are creating jobs and offering visitors a fresh, modern welcome to one of Victoria’s most iconic destinations.

As the southernmost point of mainland Australia, the Prom offers visitors:

• world class hiking trails
• kayaking
• snorkelling
• camping
• breathtaking coastal scenery
• unique opportunities to encounter native species up close.

Wilsons Prom Revitalisation Project

The Tidal River Visitor Centre at Wilsons Prom has undergone a major renovation. It’s the highlight of a $23 million investment through the Tourism Infrastructure Program to deliver upgrades across one of the state’s most iconic national parks.

Located within Wilsons Promontory’s main visitor hub, the centre supports a wide range of accommodation options and activities. It's a key destination for visitors to the park.

The project delivered an extension to the visitor centre with:

• digital information kiosks
• new signage
• upgraded seating and outdoor spaces
• paths
• landscaping
• internal and external upgrades throughout the building.

The wider project has delivered a range of improved visitor amenities, accessibility and tourism infrastructure. They include:

• the Prom Wildlife Walk
• upgrades to four Wilderness Retreat safari tents and shared kitchen facilities
• approved planning for two new 3-bedroom units at Tidal River
• construction is now underway on a 10 km Sanctuary Fence.

This project is part of a broader Prom Sanctuary project, a 20-year vision to establish Victoria’s largest conservation sanctuary. It has been supported by more than $800,000 in extra donations and grants through the People and Parks Foundation and the Victorian Government’s Nature Fund.

Retro revival of Wilsons Prom Motel

The Wilsons Prom Motel in Foster has been transformed into a coastal retro escape. Thanks to the Regional Tourism Investment Fund it's now a sustainable, high-tech, pet-friendly retro motel.

Twenty rooms were upgraded with:

• remote check-in and keyless entry
• a facade that reflects its new retro vibes
• a new online booking system.

The project created 5 jobs during construction and one ongoing job upon completion. Occupancy rates are forecast to increase by more than 70%.

Implementing sustainable features and practices was a huge focus of the project. These include:

• solar panels
• energy efficient appliances
• installation of double-glazed windows to improve energy efficiency
• furniture created from recycled materials
• as well as a commitment to reduce single-use plastics and introduction of paperless office.
