We've supported the world’s first commercial quantum diamond foundry to open in Melbourne.

Global tech leader Quantum Brilliance opened the new quantum diamond foundry at the Co-Labs facility in Notting Hill. It will develop revolutionary technology for quantum devices, create highly skilled jobs and boost Victoria’s thriving technology ecosystem.

We helped to establish the new Foundry through $18 million from Breakthrough Victoria and support from the Made in Victoria – Industry R&D Infrastructure Fund.

A quantum diamond foundry is a facility for manufacturing growing circuits that supercharge computing power, using artificial diamonds.

Quantum technologies are the new frontier in digital tech. They are supercomputers that can solve far more complex problems compared to current binary, or ‘traditional’ computers. However, they need a fixed set-up in temperatures below freezing, making it hard for the technology to be portable. Using lab grown diamonds, the foundry develops quantum devices that:

  • are compact
  • are portable
  • work at room temperature.

Quantum technologies have many life-changing applications such as:

  • accelerating drug discoveries
  • medical treatments and testing.

The foundry in Notting Hill will strengthen local expertise and expand a burgeoning local quantum industry. It will accelerate Victoria as a world leader in diamond quantum technologies.

CSIRO modelling found that Australia's quantum technology industry could be worth almost $6 billion and will use 19,400 workers by 2045.

The Victorian Government’s Economic Growth Statement identifies digital technologies, including quantum, as a key priority sector. It will drive initiatives that unlock economic growth, create jobs, and foster a culture of innovation and cutting-edge ideas.
