Better Approvals for Business program

The Better Approvals for Business program is focussed on improving the regulatory and associated approvals processes for businesses, to support economic recovery and job creation. This program is part of the Victorian Government's regulation reform agenda announced in November 2020.

Reviews are undertaken from the perspective of business and industry to identify tangible, practical reforms that can be implemented in the short to medium term. This program builds on the success of the earlier DJSIR Small Business Regulation Review, which delivered the highly successful Better Approval Project with Victorian Councils between 2018 and 2020.

This 2-year program comprises delivery of a series of rolling regulatory reform reviews. Each review reform package is co-designed with businesses and industry, regulators, Local and State Government to ensure reforms target priority issues impacting businesses and are readily implementable.

Review 1: Telecommunications Infrastructure Provisions

Review delivered – Reforms aim to improve planning and related processes to facilitate better delivery of telecommunications infrastructure in Victoria. Implementation is well underway, with the majority of reforms already delivered.

Review 2: Business Friendly Council Approvals

Review delivered – Reforms aim to improve the end-to-end approvals process for businesses, making it easier to start and grow a business in Victoria. The business-friendly approvals reforms have been delivered through a pilot with 7 Victorian Councils and are already seeing benefits for businesses and councils.

Review 3: Unlocking the Potential of the Medtech Sector

Public consultation completed – Review addresses key barriers to growth of the medtech sector, with a particular focus on local manufacturing.

Review 4: Events and Festivals Approvals

Public consultation completed - Review addresses key pain points for Events and Festivals business approvals, outcomes are currently being finalised.
