Mentors
Mentors can help you become work-ready. They can help you to find a job that suits you. They can also support you for the first six months of your new job.
Who mentors help
Mentors can help you if:
- you’ve been looking for work for a while (12 months or more), or
- you’re facing challenges that make it harder to find a job.
Jobs Victoria supports people to overcome challenges and find a job.
These challenges may include:
- not finishing high school or having post-school qualifications
- a lack of Australian work experience
- low confidence in speaking and understanding English
- not confident with reading, writing or maths (low literacy)
- low confidence using a computer or other technology
- limited knowledge of how to look for and apply for a job
- limited social and professional networks that can help with looking for a job
- low confidence and low self-esteem
- personal circumstances that limit job options or make it challenging to search for and/or keep a job, such as:
- experience of family violence
- unstable housing or homelessness
- a significant disability
- mental health challenges
- drug and alcohol dependence
- criminal record.
Mentors consider other barriers on a case-by-case basis.
A Mentor will assess your eligibility for support based on your individual circumstances.
How Mentors help
Mentors work with you to understand your work goals and help you achieve them.
A Mentor can help you find a job by:
- supporting you to become job ready
- supporting you to apply for jobs
- helping you to develop your resume and prepare for job interviews
- matching you with jobs that interest you.
They can also help with:
- enrolling you in training or helping you gain qualifications
- assisting you with personal needs, including transport to attend interviews
- providing support for six months once you have a job
- connecting you to other community services.
